SPSU celebrates Engineering Week
SPSU is recognizing Engineering Week, Feb. 17 - Feb. 23. The theme this year is “Georgia’s
Water Future?” There will be two luncheons and one case study.
The first luncheon is set for 11:30 a.m. on Feb.19 in the Student
Center, guest speaker Jack Dozier will speak on Georgia’s
Water Future. He is the Executive Director of the Georgia Association
of Water Professionals. All ET students, faculty and staff are invited to attend, as well as
the ET Foundation and Industrial Advisory Board members. In addition,
some of the student competition teams, including the Steel Bridge
Team and the Formula One Team, will have representatives available
to answer questions about their respective organizations.
On Feb. 20, there will be a reception and luncheon hosted by the Technical
Women of Georgia Power. The event will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Rotunda of the Library, all SPSU female
engineering students are invited to attend. There is limited seating available
for the event, so please RSVP in advance to G2TWIG@southernco.com.
Lockheed Martin is providing a case study on Feb. 20 on the SPSU campus from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Building M, room 100. SPSU Engineering
students will have the opportunity to work in teams to create a solution
involving a problem with a
F-16 Missile Warning System. Free pizza and

New Ethics and Reporting
Hotline
A new hotline for SPSU ethical concerns
has been instituted. You can find quick links to the website on SPSU Place, the Human Resources home page,
and the Student Services home page. You can report any school-related
concerns 24 hours a day, seven-days-a-week by phone, 1-877-516-3464,

Heart to heart
February is heart month. On Feb. 12, two-time heart attack survivor, Doug Steinberger
educated SPSU faculty on heart disease. About 30 SPSU staff, faculty, students and guests listened
closely to the moving speech.
In addition, SPSU’s assistant
director of Recreational Sports for Health and Wellness, Kelly Blosser,
provided each attendee with a packet of informational pamphlets from
the America Heart Association. Heart Disease is the number one killer
of both men and women today, for more information on how you can become

Chili
Cook-Off winners
On Feb. 6, SPSU hosted its 12th Annual
Tony Tilmans’ Chili Cook-Off. SPSU faculty and staff enjoyed a
variety of soup and chili dishes. A panel of four judges, including
President Rossbacher, vice president of Academic Affairs Zvi Szfran, Dean of School of Arts and Sciences Alan Gabrielli and student Kevin Moss tasted each of the chilis to determine
a winner for the contest. The winners of the event are as follows: 1st
place, Prof. Joel Fowler for his Smoldering Atomic
Chili of Satan (SACS); 2nd place, Locks of Chili by Kenneth Shelton in Facilities and 3rd place was rewarded to Bennie Sue Houck in the Registra's Office
for her Firehouse Chili. A good time and a full stomach was had by all.
African-American
readings
On Feb. 7, students and faculty each took turns reading excerpts from
their favorite Black authors. SPSU staff members Jill Forest and Phyllis
Weatherly provided a combined personal collection of 39 books for the
event. An additional six library books were added to the collection.
The event, which lasted from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Student
Center Lobby, was in recognition of Black History Month. August Wilson,
Maya Angelou, and Nikki Giovanni are just a few of the authors who were
highlighted at the event.
Congratulations Dr. Vasa-Sideris
Dr. Sandra Vasa-Sideris, was recently promoted to Professor of Business
Administration at SPSU. She also serves as the Graduate Coordinator
for the MBA program. Her teaching interests include management
and organizational behavior, human resource management, managerial communication
and strategic management. She received an Outstanding Teaching
Award at SPSU and participated in the Governor's Teaching Fellows Program.
She holds an MBA in Management and a Ph.D. in Business (major in Industrial
Relations, and a minor in Management) from Georgia State University
and BA and MA degrees in French from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
