Final
inning for SPSU baseball
SPSU’s baseball team ended their 2008 season with 39 wins, the
third highest win total in SPSU’s history. The team also advanced
to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Region
XIII Tournament, the third time within the last five years. Other accomplishments
for the team this year include:
• Coach Matt Griffin claiming his 150th win on Feb. 8.
• Six of the team players selected for the Southern States
Athletic Conference (SSAC) All-Conference Team.
• Nine players recognized on the SSAC All Academic Team list and
four to the Second Team All SSAC list.
• Player Mark Doll selected as the Conference Pitcher of the Year
and a First Team All Region XIII selection.
• Player Josh Grooms named to the First Team All Conference and Region
XIII, while being placed on the Golden Glove Team for both.
• Two SPSU baseball records broken by players Daniel Griffin and
Daniel Hester. Griffin broke the single season batting average record
with a .452, and Hester broke the single season home run record with
13.
Congratulations Runnin’ Hornets, we can’t wait to see what's in store for next season!
Campus coffee break
President Dr. Lisa A. Rossbacher invites all faculty and staff for a
"campus coffee break" on Wed., June 4, from 9:30 to 10:30
a.m. As a University community, we have fewer opportunities in the summer
to gather and share our "sense of place" than during the regular
academic year. For the last several summers, we've used the "campus
coffee break" as a chance to gather informally during the summer
months, to give faculty and staff an opportunity to come together and
share conversation and fellowship. Please join colleagues from across
campus at the Globe, in the plaza area between the Student Center and
the Administration Building, assuming the weather cooperates (if not,
the rain location will be the lobby of the Student Center.)
I hope you will come by and join us at the Globe for coffee, pastries,
and a chance to catch up with friends and colleagues. See you there!
Harlem
Globetrotters come to campus
Come and see the Harlem Legends Celebrity Basketball Game in the Gymnasium
on Sat., June 14. Players include retired Harlem Globe Trotters and
current NBA members. Admission is $10 in advance and $15 at the door.
All proceeds collected will benefit the Smyrna Basketball Club's Smyrna
Stars, a youth basketball league for boys and girls between the ages
of 9-17. The Smyrna Basketball Club has been helping to teach Cobb County
and greater Atlanta kids the value of teamwork and sportsmanship for
12 years. This is the first year that SPSU plays host for the game.
If you would like to purchase event tickets in advance, please contact
SPSU men’s assistant basketball coach Collier St. Clair at cstclair@spsu.edu.
The game begins at 7 p.m., doors open at 6:15 p.m.
Vote for your Staff Council Representative!
Let your voice be heard! It’s time for SPSU staff members to vote for the 2008-2010 Staff Council. Staff Council members represent staff employees in groups by IPED category. We are electing one Staff Council representative from IPED Category 5, one from Category 6, one from Category 7 and three from Category 8. You should have received your ballot by email. Be sure that if you fax in your ballot, you include the separate sheet with your name, so that we can properly account for your vote. Ballots are due by 12 p.m. on Fri., June 6, 2008. If you would like more information on how to vote, send an email to staffcouncil@spsu.edu. To find out more about the SPSU Staff Council, visit our website at www.spsu.edu/staffcouncil.
SPSU now offers eMSD
SPSU faculty, staff and students are now able to purchase many software
titles through the Managed Software Distribution organization at the
University of Georgia. The process, known as eMSD, makes the software
available for personal use at significantly discounted prices. Up until
now, individuals could not take advantage of the volume discounts offered
to the University System. Since the announcement, SPSU staff and faculty
have taken advantage of the great savings offered on the site for a collective savings of more than $3,500.
To take advantage of this opportunity visit: http://emsd.uga.edu. To
log in, use your SPSU user name and password. SPSU is only the second
school (outside of UGA) to be able to offer this opportunity to its
staff. New titles will be added regularly, but if there is a package
you are interested in you can contact the eMSD administrators directly
at emsd@uga.edu.
News to share
If your department has an upcoming event or news to share with
the campus community, please send an e-mail with all the pertinent information
to pr@spsu.edu for it to appear in a future issue of the SPSU Hornet’s
Nest.
